Is All Water Created Equal?

Let’s talk water. It makes up 71% of the surface of our planet, 96.5% all of Earth’s water is in our ocean and up to 60% of the human body. Its essential for our existence, yet all drinkable water is not created equal. I learned the hard way. This is my story.

Between the year’s 2017-2018, I traveled extensively for work. Most days of the week was spent on planes and in hotels all over the US and parts of Canada. On those planes, I drank a lot of coffee to stay alert and get as much work as I possibly could before landing. In addition, my job required me to workout - sometimes multiple times a day which meant drinking a significant amount of water to stay hydrated. I filled my reusable water bottle with local tap and “filtered” water. When eating out, I would generally eat more fish than meat to limit overly processed meat and oder a glass of water.

In 2018, despite being in the best shape since playing sports in high school - something in my body didn’t feel right. I felt a deep ache in my left arm, wrist and hand. Initially, I thought it may have been related to an injury from working out, however it persisted. Then, one day out of nowhere while traveling - my face and arm got hot which appeared to be a localized heat rash. The first time it happened, it lasted for 15-20 minutes. Then, it would sporadically re-occur but would last for up to an hour or more. Something was not right.

When I landed in LA, I reached out to my primary physician to run some tests. He said everything was fine, all tests came back as normal levels, but I knew my body wasn’t normal. Something was wrong. That led me to believe that I may have had a pinched nerve that could be affecting the deep ache in my arm. I researched holistic chiropractors and booked an appointment. What i didn’t know going into the appointment was how pivotal this would be on my life. When I arrived he did some tests and discovered that heavy metals were affecting my liver, adrenals and bone marrow. The reason for the rashes were because my liver could no longer process the heavy metals and it had nowhere to go but to be released through my skin. The reason for my deep aches in my arm was a result of heavy metals potentially affecting my bone marrow. I ended up taking a hair follicle test that confirmed my body had the following heavy metals in very high levels: Cadmium, Magnesium, Platinum, Silver and Titanium. It’s time for a change.

I went on a full cleanse. No gluten, no seafood, grass-fed and pasture-raised meat, no sugar, no alcohol, lots of veggies and nothing but filtered water. I could control nearly everything I was consuming but the quality of the water I drank. This led me to down the path to source the best water filters one could find - especially with a baby on the way. I refused to drink out of plastic water bottles due to the large carbon footprint and the amount of waste it produces. After doing research, I was surprised to find that most water filters commercially sold last anywhere between 20-120 gallons and only “reduce or remove” a variety of metals and contaminants without noting how much. See below from a leading water filter source’s website:

I ended up choosing a 2 Filter Gravity Counter by Radiant Life. Between the two filters, they last a total of 6,000 gallons (3,000/filter) before replacing. The average water filter pitcher would have to be replaced nearly 150 times before this one has to be replaced - which is mind blowing and ends up being costly longterm!

The best part about these filters is that they remove a significant amount of heavy metals, contaminants and pathogens which I’ve shared directly from their website below:

I’ve been using the gravity water filter for quite some time now and its been a game changer for me! The water tastes phenomenal, my skin is better, I have more energy, plus its compact which makes it easy to travel with and even holds over 2 gallons of filtered water at a time! I’ve partnered up with them to give you 10% off your purchase by using promo code: MIKE on their website including all of the water filtration systems - hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

After being even more aware of where the food and water I consumed was sourced - the deep aches in my arm, the rashes and chronic fatigue has not come back. It’s a constant work in progress and I don’t think it will get easier over time. The world is changing at a rapid pace. There are more contaminants entering the air we breathe as well as our food and water sources every single day - which makes it nearly impossible to avoid them. What we can do is be more aware of what we buy at the grocery store, the water that we drink, reduce our carbon footprint and the amount of waste we produce. Together we can make an impact, one day at a time.
